El 15 de noviembre de 1931, un grupo de fieles musulmanes decide fundar una institución tendiente a la organización de la comunidad islámica en Argentina, en continuidad con la Sociedad Árabe Islámica, fundada en 1922. Su primera denominación fue: Asociación Pan Islamismo. En 1940 cambia su nombre por Asociación Islámica de Previsión Social, hasta que en 1958 adopta su denominación actual: Centro Islámico de la República Argentina.

La mezquita Al Ahmad, que depende del Centro Islámico de la República Argentina, se construyó a partir de 1983 y fue inaugurada en septiembre de 1985. Es la primera con arquitectura islámica fundada en Argentina. En la fachada del templo, se destaca un minarete, desde donde se llama a los musulmanes a la oración cinco veces al día.
