La Iglesia Ortodoxa Serbia, es por su antigüedad la sexta de las Iglesias ortodoxas autoacéfalas. A esta iglesia pertenecen cristianos ortodoxos de los países Serbia, Montenegro y otras regiones eslavas cercanas. El mayor número de inmigrantes llegaron a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, principalmente desde Génova.

Como otras comunidades de rito cristiano oriental, el primer lugar que frecuentaron para el culto fue la Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa de San Telmo, hasta qué 1948 se forma la Asociación Civil San Sava, con sede en la calle Perú, donde se construye esta iglesia, siendo el primer lugar de culto ortodoxo serbio en Buenos Aires.
