En 1588, cuando Juan de Garay funda Buenos Aires, la orden de los franciscanos es la primera en establecerse en Buenos Aires.

El actual templo de “San Francisco”, inaugurado a mediados del siglo XVIII, es una iglesia de nave única, diseñada por el arquitecto jesuita Andres Blanqui.

Su estilo arquitectónico luego de sucesivas modificaciones fue intervenido por el arquitecto alemán Ernesto Sackmann, hacia 1911, quien le otorgó a la fachada un tratamiento ornamental inspirado en el barroco bávaro. Su cercanía a Plaza de Mayo, hizo de este lugar parte del escenario de muchos de los acontecimientos que marcaron la historia de nuestro país. En el atrio del convento fue depuesto el gobernador Manuel Dorrego el 1 de diciembre de 1829- También funcionó un hospital de sangre durante la revolución  de 1880.

Fue una de las iglesias más afectadas en los incendios de junio de 1955, cuando se destruyó totalmente el altar mayor. En el lugar del retablo destruido, se colocó el tapiz diseñado por Horacio Butler, “La glorificación de San Francisco”
